AP and others reported on the morning of the 4th (Korea Standard Time) that referee Hoberg was fired for sharing a sports gambling account with a friend who bet on an MLB game and intentionally deleting electronic messages related to the secretariat's investigation.
The friend of referee Hoberg's bet on 141 baseball games from April 3, 2021, to November 2, 2023, bringing his total revenue to nearly $214,000 (W300 million). The fact was made public in February last year, and the MLB Secretariat immediately launched a gambling investigation. The MLB Secretariat did not find any circumstantial evidence that Hoberg attempted to manipulate the game in which he himself refereed, but Michael Hill, senior vice president of field operations, notified him of the dismissal. It was because he had shown inappropriate behavior as a referee.
Article 21 of the MLB Rules states that players, referees, and officials who bet on their team's game will be permanently expelled, and those who bet on gambling on other baseball games will be suspended for one year. At the time, referee Hoberg appealed the MLB Secretariat's decision.
However, Commissioner Manfred said in a statement that regulating sports betting behavior is the most important priority. "Although it has not been confirmed that referee Hoberg was directly involved in gambling, it was inappropriate in the process of sharing betting accounts. There is a legitimate reason to keep referee Hoberg fired for failing to maintain the integrity of the baseball game."
